The Gauteng Province is the smallest of all the countries provinces with the highest population density. The Commissions Gauteng Office as a result receives a high volume of diverse complaint types and complainants. Its cosmopolitan nature and core as the economic hub mean that a range of issues are brought to the attention of the provincial office involving both policy and new and emerging matters of interest to the region. The Eastern Cape communities, particularly rural communities face unique challenges in accessing information on human rights and basic government services. They are underserved and characterised by inferior infrastructure, low income, and myriad of unreported and unchallenged human rights violations. The majority of rural people are poor and largely depend on social grants and agriculture for social progress.
The Commission champions the protection, promotion, respect and culture of human rights amongst citizens of the province, particularly the elderly, children, women, workers, and other vulnerable groups in society. We empower communities through outreach interventions as well as researched information on fundamental human rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution, 1996.
The mandate of the Commission is to promote, protect, investigate and realise human rights in the NC province without fear, favour or prejudice. In terms of our Annual Performance Plan, our main focus is on rural and peri-urban communities through hosting of human rights outreach clinics, stakeholder engagements and conducting research.
Introduction:
The Western Cape Province is a melting pot with a rich cultural history. However along with this rich and diverse cultural landscape, socio-economic conditions, economic status, religion, politics, rural & urban mark numerous fault-line which characterize social divisions.  The province remains distinctly unequal with extreme wealth and deep structural poverty co-existing side by side. This context both informs and makes efforts to resolve human rights disputes challenging.
