The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) is appalled at the death of 5 year old Viwe Jali, who died earlier this week after falling into a pit latrine at Luna Primary school in Bizana, in the Eastern Cape. Only 3 years after the tragic and preventable death of 5 year old Michael Komape, the failure of the State to prevent a reoccurrence and to eradicate the prevalence of pit latrines in schools is unacceptable.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mpumalanga provincial office will be commemorating Human Rights Day under the Theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Unity in Action in Advancing Human Rights”. The day is commemorated annually on 21 March to remind all South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in the country.

Human Rights Day is commemorated annually on 21st March to honour the sacrifice of those who fell during the Sharpeville massacre on this day in 1960. This massacre claimed the lives of many people protesting against the Apartheid pass laws, including children, and left in its wake the abiding memory of its horror.  South Africa commemorates this day as national Human Rights Day. The day holds immense significance for the South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or Commission), tasked by the Constitution to monitor, educate promote and protect human rights.  The Commission has planned a range of activities throughout the country during human rights month to emphasise the value of respect for human rights in a democratic country.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be hosting a Dialogue on Business and Human Rights on 13 and 14 March 2018 at the Capital Moloko Hotel, Johannesburg to discuss critical issues with regard to the impact of business on human rights across primary stakeholder groups, including government, business and civil society. This dialogue is a pinnacle event for the SAHRC’s Head Office during March 2018, Human Rights Month.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) Gauteng provincial office will convene the second part of the hearings relating to the investigation into allegations of unfair discrimination, racism, sexism and harassment at the University of South Africa (UNISA) from 12 – 16 March 2018.
The hearing started on 20 February 2018 following a request from the UNISA’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya, to investigate allegations of unfair discrimination, racism, sexism and harassment at the UNISA College of Law.

The Film & Publication Board has reclassified the award winning controversial film Inxeba (The Wound) to a rating of X18. In a statement released through a series of tweets, the FPB's official account stated that the Appeals Tribunal of the board had decided to overturn the original rating given to the film of 16 LS, to X18.
