Child Protection Week is a precursor Youth Month, celebrated and recognised in South Africa. The Constitution enjoins us all to act in the best interests of the child.

One bucket toilet for 22 people in Ekurhuleni a human rights violation

The DA will write to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to investigate the sanitation situation at the L&J informal settlement in Ekurhuleni.

A news report today revealed a case where one bucket toilet that must be used by 22 people in the L&J informal settlement. This is but one example of the gross shortage of service delivery that this community faces.

No trade union in the democratic history of South Africa has attracted as much criticism as SADTU, the South African Democratic Teachers Union. In the past, attempts to weaken the union’s powerful hold on the country’s education system have largely come to naught. Over 18 months ago, the Democratic Alliance tried to go another route: asking the South African Human Rights Commission to probe whether SADTU is violating the constitutional rights of learners to a basic education. It’s now been confirmed that the investigation is under way. By REBECCA DAVIS.
