SAHRC condemns the killing of police

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) condemns the recent spate of police killings. As many as seven police officers have been killed in the last couple of weeks. The SAHRC wishes to reinforce the constitutional idea that human rights, and in this situation particularly, the right to life and dignity, is for all in South Africa, including police officers.

The South African Human Rights Commission expresses its concern arising from media reports that the former Wilgehof Primary School teacher who was found guilty of racism has again been employed by the Department of Education, two-years after he was found guilty of serious misconduct by the Department.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) welcomes the judgment handed down yesterday by the Western Cape High Court in a matter relating to the lack of judicial oversight in the granting of emolument attachment orders (“EAOs”). The SAHRC intervened in the matter as amicus curiae, to champion the human rights of people who are poor and vulnerable. In handing down his judgment, Judge Desai placed on record the court’s ‘indebtedness to the amicus curiae and their counsel.’
