The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) unequivocally condemns the ongoing unlawful evictions carried out by municipalities, private security companies, and other state-sanctioned actors. These actions, often executed without court orders and in blatant disregard of the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act 19 of 1998 (PIE), constitute a grave violation of the Constitution and a direct assault on the dignity of the most vulnerable in our society.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) has issued subpoenas to the National Director-Generals of the Departments of Social Development, Treasury, Basic Education, Home Affairs, Health and the Eastern Cape office of the Premier, compelling them to appear before the Commission in terms of section 15(1)(c) and (d) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act 40 of 2013 (SAHRC Act).
