Unrest in Soweto was inevitable, a community leader has said, due to housing shortages and unemployment.
Soweto community leader Themba Makhubela gave testimony before the South African Human Rights Commission, during its investigation into the July unrest, on Thursday.
He detailed the socio-economic conditions that had eroded faith in the authorities, saying it was unsurprising the community had begun looting.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is expected to continue with the second leg of the national investigative hearings into the July 2021 unrest which erupted mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
The unrest caused billions of rand in damage to infrastructure and businesses, while hundreds of lives were lost during the violence that erupted.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is expected to continue with the second leg of the national investigative hearings into the July 2021 unrest which erupted mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), in the Eastern Cape, has launched an investigation into the quality of tap water in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMBM) and Buffalo City Municipality (BCM).
The Commission says the investigation will allow it to engage the two metropolitans on tap water-related concerns.

The purpose of the meeting is to update parents on the progress made by the SAHRC’s investigation, and to listen to their concerns.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will on Monday conduct a joint inspection with government in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

Two victims of the so-called ‘Masoyi Monster’ are yet to be buried. The Mpumalanga High Court found Julius Mndawe guilty on five counts of murder and defeating the ends of justice, last week.
Mndawe killed and buried the women in his yard at the Masoyi Village near Hazyview, between 2018 and 2019.

Cape Town - Despite the extension of equality courts to magistrate’s courts to attend to matters of equality, communities are still submitting complaints of this nature to the Human Rights Commission.
This emerged during a community engagement on Equality Toolkits on Thursday, where the provincial Human Rights Commission (HRC), in partnership with Langa Community Advice Services, hosted a workshop for community’s stakeholders.
