Cape Town - The South African Human Rights Commission has confirmed they will be visiting three prisons where solitary confinement exists.

Details of the proposed hearings emerged during a virtual meeting that not only looked into the circumstances surrounding the death of homeless man Dumisani Joxo on Sunday, 9 January 2022, but also into systemic attacks on homeless people in general.
Monday’s virtual meeting — hosted by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and activist group Ndifuna Ukwazi, and attended by civil society organisations and representatives of homeless communities — discussed the perceived increase in brutality directed at poor families and the homeless by Cape Town law enforcement officers.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has called on the Department of Basic Education to fulfil its constitutional mandate by making sure that the quality of education in rural, township and suburban schools is equal.
It says the state of education needs to be urgently addressed to guarantee every child the right to a decent education.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is set to take legal action against several provincial education departments over unsafe and unhygienic toilets in schools.
On Tuesday, the SAHRC announced it plans on taking five provincial education departments in North West, Free State, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) to court, in a bid to get rid of pit toilets.

THE South African Human Rights Commission has appealed for calm and peace in the country. This follows the court nullifying the decision on the Department of Correctional Services’ granting medical parole to former president Jacob Zuma.
The Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, rescinded the decision last week, and ordered that Zuma return to the department’s facilities to serve the rest of his sentence, amid threats of violence from Zuma's supporters.

In its pilot phase, set for the 2022 school calendar, this important collaboration will focus on the communities of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, about 50 km northwest of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police Minister Bheki Cele is testifying at the South African Human Rights Commission hearings looking into the July unrest as the last witness for the KwaZulu-Natal proceedings.
JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday told the inquiry investigating the July unrest that he was not convinced the Phoenix violence, which broke out during the unrest, could be linked with racial tension, saying it was crime.

Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams says she cannot recall Cabinet discussing whether the July unrest was an in fact an insurrection.
She testified at the South African Human Rights Commission’s investigative hearings into the unrest.
“I doubt or I don’t recall that we went to that level. When the incident happened, others were in portfolio committees and there were urgent meetings, as cabinet we really tried to apply our minds on what could have been the root cause,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams.
At the time she was the minister of communications.
