Former Sodwana Bay guesthouse owner André Slade has been fined R50 000, payable to a charity, for racist remarks he made in 2016.
The Equality Court in Ubombo, Zululand, this week ruled that Slade’s comments and conduct amounted to unfair discrimination on the ground of race and hate speech and that they went against the constitution.

Mokopane medical doctor Jimmy van der Berg, accused of racist conduct at his private surgery, and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) agreed that the commission will actively monitor his future actions and should it find that the terms of the conciliation agreement has not been met, the council will proceed to institute immediate civil or criminal action against Van der Berg or any other appropriate redress it may deem fit as determined by its constitutional mandate.

The lobby group African Diaspora Forum (ADF) is looking for general amnesty for all undocumented immigrants in SA.
The organisation’s chairperson‚ Marc Gbaffou‚ was speaking at the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) two-day national investigative hearing on migration‚ xenophobia and social cohesion hearings.
"Many immigrants’ kids cannot go to school because their parents are illegal in this country‚ making the children illegal as well. Although the South African Constitution stipulates that every child has a right to education‚ some children of immigrants have continuously been denied these rights‚" Gbaffou said.

These were the words of Marc Gbaffou, chairperson of African Diaspora Forum during the National Investigative Hearing on Migration, Xenophobia and Social Cohesion held by the South African Human Rights Commission in Johannesburg yesterday.
Gbaffou has written a letter to President Jacob Zuma, requesting that all undocumented immigrants living in South Africa be granted general amnesty.

The commission said on Wednesday that department officials‚ including Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga‚ were responsible for the pupils burning to death at their hostel in Leeudoringsstad.

A KwaZulu-Natal Democratic Alliance leader's attempt to fight Islamophobia on Facebook almost five years ago is going to the dogs. Literally.
On the eve of its provincial elective congress at the weekend‚ the DA instructed deputy provincial chair nominee and Women's Network provincial leader Shehana Kajee to apologise for an online post in which she called for the Muslim community to "go on the attack" in the name of Islam in 2013.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has confirmed it has received a complaint about the cancelled screening of the movie Inxeba: The Wound following protests, threats of intimidation and violence.
The film has received a lot of criticism following its release with claims that it violates the sanctity of cultural practices, which by nature are secret.

The Inkatha Freedom Party calls on the South African Human Rights Commission to urgently institute its own investigation into the reports that workers’ rights are being violated at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban.
“Workers employed in the maintenance hospital department are complaining that since 2015 they have not been provided with protective clothing and they are wearing worn out clothing. If they raise this issue with relevant authorities their complaints fall on deaf ears.
