The annual South African Child Gauge has been released, and the results were not surprising: our children are in trouble. But as State Capture becomes an increasingly familiar part of our national vocabulary, and the budget for tertiary education dominates headlines, one wonders: where is the money going to come from to take care of the next generation? The Mafube Municipality in the Free State has once again come under the spotlight.
This after the DA in the province requested the South African Human Rights Commission to launch investigations into the municipality’s lack of service delivery and inadequate sanitation. It is alleged that the municipality, still in the red with Eskom, is failing to provide its residents with clean running water. This is coupled with allegations of sewage water overflowing in many of its towns. In a statement, the party says the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) should also be investigated following their failure to improve the functioning of the municipality after placing it under administration earlier this year.
