The engagement will focus on the challenges and potential human rights violations at the Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) duly honours the spirit of resilience and courage shown by the women of 1956 to march to the then apartheid headquarters, the union buildings, to protest against the unjust pass laws.  The Commission salutes women for their tireless effort to make South Africa a better place for all, for nurturing children and their communities; and for flying the South African flag high in their small communities, corporate settings, and sports activities.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/ the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is currently investigating concerns regarding the use of space at the Komani Psychiatric Hospital. Psychiatric hospitals in the province are either full or overcrowded, resulting in challenges in accommodating psychiatric patients. Many patients are currently housed in local hospitals, while some are in correctional facilities awaiting transfer to appropriate care.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will be embarking on a data gathering related to pit latrines and monitoring activities in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality in Mbizana and Matatiele Local Municipality. These activities fall within the provisions of section 184 (1) (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa that; the South African Human Rights Commission must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.
