The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) condemns the use of the term “monkey” by former radio deejay and radio personality, Sasha Martinengo, in reference to Member of the National Legislature, Honourable, Julius Malema. The Commission is particularly concerned as Martinengo, at the time of the utterance, did so during a radio breakfast show, where he is expected to use his massive platform in the promotion of the respect of equality and dignity.

On 14th December 1990, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (through resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. On 19 September 2018, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) will conduct a site inspection at Thelle Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus, following reports of six new-borns dying due to a Klebsiella pneumonia outbreak at the hospital. Further allegations indicate that overcrowding at the hospital’s neonatal unit played a key role in the outbreak and spreading of the bacteria.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) condemns, in the strongest terms, the actions by Black First Land First (BLF) members, who today, on the 17th September 2018, caused a violent disturbance at the SAHRC’s Gauteng Office at Braampark, Braamfontein in Johannesburg. A pair of spectacles were also violently taken from the CEO’s face and was only returned after some time. The Commission had to call the South African Police Service (SAPS) to intervene. However, the BLF members had left the premises before the SAPS’s arrival.

On 03 September 2018, the South African Human Rights Commission (“The Commission”) conducted a site inspection of the Vaal River following allegations of approximately 150 megalitres of raw sewage spilling into the river daily. The site inspection has revealed a prima facie violation of the rights of access to clean water, clean environment and human dignity.  In light of this, the Commission will hold an inquiry at Stonehaven on the Vaal on 25, 26 & 27 September 2018 as part of its investigation into these allegations.

On 29 August 2018 the South African Human Rights Commission (‘The Commission’) was made aware of looting and violent attacks on foreign-owned shops in Soweto and other areas around Gauteng. It soon emerged that these incidents were sparked by allegations that foreign-owned shops were selling fake and/or expired goods to the public. Thus, the Commission will investigate the possible human rights violations that arose as a result of the alleged manufacture and sale of fake and/or expired goods.
