The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission), Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) has called a meeting of strategic stakeholders to discuss issues relating to shelters for homeless persons in the Western Cape. The engagement will take place on 24 November 2023 at the Commission’s Western Cape Provincial Office in Cape Town at from 10h00. The WCPO continues to receive and consider complaints relating to individual shelters. The complaints range from alleged mistreatment by staff to alleged failure to distribute food donations to the intended recipients.

On 05 September 2023, the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) North West Provincial Office conducted a law clinic in the village of Madinyane, an area that has prevalent issues relating to statelessness in the North West province. The law clinic included a collection of information through surveys to assess the impact of statelessness. A number of community members remain without Identity Documents and Birth certificates and this inevitably affects other human rights, including, among others, the rights to education, access to health, and access to social security.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s Eastern Cape Office has received numerous complaints highlighting human rights violations caused by subpar road infrastructure in the province. The diverse landscape of the Eastern Cape brings about challenges in many areas, with roads posing limitations to residents' accessibility.

The South African Human Rights Commission (‘the Commission’) Gauteng Provincial Office is initiating an inquiry into the accessibility of public transport for people with disabilities in Gauteng.
In May 2023, the Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) received a referral complaint in terms of section 3 of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (PEPUDA) from the High Court (Johannesburg), sitting as an Equality Court. The complaint alleged that the current environment at railway stations, bus stations, and taxi ranks poses a danger to and is not accessible to commuters with disabilities. The Complainant views the current state of affairs within the public transport system as a form of unfair discrimination on the basis of disability.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) responding to compelling concerns about malnutrition within the province, undertook an investigative inquiry. This inquiry took place from August 8th to August 12th, 2022, in response to grievances received by the Commission, coupled with media reports highlighting tragic cases of children succumbing to Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) due to hunger.

Based on the complaints received by the Gauteng Provincial Office, equality remains one of the top human rights violations reported in Gauteng. There is thus a need to empower citizens on how to use the equality courts as a tool to advance their human rights and obtain justice.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in Western Cape provincial office will host a dialogue with learners and stakeholders on Reducing Alcohol Related Harms in Schools. The aim of this dialogue is to start the conversation around the harm that alcohol consumption causes and how it impacts on the attainment and enjoyment of human rights. The Dialogue also aims to help communities to begin to identify available help and share information about how to access such help in a caring and responsive environment.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in the Eastern Cape has received complaints pertaining to human rights violations emanating from poor and/or inadequate road infrastructure which may impede access to health care services, education, social security, food security, basic services and police services. The complaints illustrate the crucial role that road infrastructure plays in ensuring the enjoyment of basic human rights and facilitating access to socio economic rights.

The SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office will be conducting a capacity building workshop to equip religious structures on the right to citizenship enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (“the Constitution”) with specific focus on statelessness. This workshop is conducted in collaboration with the Mpumalanga South African Council of Churches which is established, amongst others, to address issues of justice, national reconciliation, integrity, and to contribute towards the empowerment of all those that are spiritually, socially and economically marginalised.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) notes with great concern and condemns the video that has gone viral on social media on Monday 16th October 2023, which depicts a woman who appears to suffer from a mental illness being assaulted with a panga after allegedly trespassing into private home of Limpopo gospel artist known as Ngwana Ledwaba. The incident allegedly occurred in Ga- Mashashane in Limpopo province.

In March 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) in the Eastern Cape conducted an investigative inquiry following complaints received by the Commission regarding allegations of excessive regulation of learners' appearances and school uniforms in institutions of learning. This Inquiry also considered instances of alleged discriminatory practices by educators concerning learners' natural hair, religious and cultural symbols, and requests for gender-neutral school uniforms, some of which attracted media attention.
