Following an investigation, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission or the SAHRC”) instituted an application in the Pietermaritzburg High Court against the Msunduzi Municipality (First Respondent) in November 2020 for the management, deterioration and poor state of the New England Road Landfill Site (“the Landfill Site”).

As colonialism ended on the African continent, the leaders of thirty-two newly independent African states gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to establish the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on the 25th May 1963.  The establishment of this organisation, was primarily intended to promote unity and cooperation among African states, uphold self-government and respect for territorial boundaries and eradicate all forms of colonialism from Africa.

On 20 May 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the SAHRC”) in the North West Province will participate in the Covid-19 Vaccine Roll-Out Consultative Session organised by the Department of Health. On Monday 10 May at 10h00, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission” or “SAHRC”) will convene its inquiry into the allegations of prohibition of use of languages at Stellenbosch University (“SU”) at its provincial office in Cape Town. This inquiry comes as a result of the Commission opening an investigation after receiving a number of complaints alleging that students at Stellenbosch University (“SU”) are being prevented from communicating in selected languages.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) received complaints alleging that residents of Kimberley has been experiencing water shortages for the past three (3) days. The Commission is concerned about the impact the water shortages have on the residents and more specifically on older persons, persons with disabilities, health facilities and women and children.

The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office will conduct a fact finding visit as part of its monitoring mandate at Mbilwi Secondary School in the Vhembe District Municipality, after it was reported that a learner from said school has met her untimely death post the bullying acts by a fellow learner. The visit will take place today, the 14th of April 2021.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the SAHRC”) has received hundreds of complaints of human rights violations against various municipalities in the North West Province. A majority of the complaints relate particularly to lack of access to sufficient water, poor water quality, electricity outages, poor sewerage system, lack of access to basic sanitation and poor domestic waste removal.

Last week, Thando Mahlangu, Ndebele author and activist was asked to leave the premises on account of being dressed in traditional Ndebele regalia.
