The Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO) will be launching a report of the dialogue which was held on 11 August 2021 on the impact of human trafficking on human rights amid COVID-19. The dialogue took place following media reports and concerns that Mpumalanga is being used as a gateway for trafficking persons, particularly women and children, from neighbouring countries to other provinces in the country and beyond.

The SAHRC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office in partnership with DOJ &CD will conduct advocacy initiatives with the aim of educating communities on the equality toolkit, and to promoting the use and functionality of equality courts. The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”), in response to numerous complaints against Lindsay Maasdorp (“the Respondent”) of alleged hate speech on social media, instituted proceedings in the Western Cape High Court (sitting as the Equality Court) against the Respondent.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or the SAHRC) will recommence its National Investigative Hearing into the July 2021 Unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Provinces on Monday, the 21st February 2022. The Hearing will continue until Friday, 4th March 2022.
This second leg of the National Hearing will focus on events as they unfolded in Gauteng Province during the unrest in July 2021 and will also feature the continuation of evidence from the KZN sitting. The Hearing Panel is due to hear testimony from survivors, various community members as well as industry players in commerce, private security and State officials.

On Friday, 18 February 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission, Gauteng Provincial Office will host a stakeholder engagement in observance of the World Day of Social Justice. The World Day of Social Justice is observed and celebrated to promote social development, human dignity and equal opportunities for all. This celebration coalesces with the Commission’s medium to long-term objectives toward promoting, monitoring and protecting rights in general and the right to equality in particular.

The South African Human Rights Commission (‘the Commission’) will convene an inquiry into allegations of racial discrimination or discrimination in general in advertising within South Africa. The Inquiry is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg from 14 – 18 March 2022.
In the recent past, there have been a few advertisements which have been indicative of racism and have evoked much criticism of the industry and their clients.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) will conduct a capacity-building workshop for Community Development Workers (CDWs) to train them as Human Rights Champions. The capacity building workshop is aimed at empowering the local stakeholders by heightening awareness about human rights and structures that can help with redress for human rights violations with a specific focus on the role of the SAHRC in promoting, monitoring and protecting human rights.

Tomorrow, the South African Human Rights Commission, Gauteng Provincial Office will be conducting a site inspection of the Wemmer Pan Lake in Johannesburg. This follows allegations of environmental pollution and raw sewage pouring into the lake.

On Monday, 14 February 2022, the Gauteng office of the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) will conduct a joint inspection with government stakeholders in Alexandra to assess progress made in implementing its directives.

From 27 September 2021 to 1 October 2021, the Commission in Mpumalanga conducted an investigative inquiry into service delivery challenges within local municipalities in Mpumalanga. The inquiry followed service delivery complaints against various local municipalities in the province over the years. The issues raised in the various complaints included the failure by municipalities to provide water and housing, sewage spillages, sewage treatment challenges, electricity outages, non-collection of refuse and potholes on the roads.
