The South African Human Rights Commission Western Cape provincial office (WCPO) will conduct a capacity building workshop for Community Development Workers (CDWs) to train them as Human Rights Champions. The capacity building workshop is aimed at empowering the CDWs by heightening awareness about human rights and structures that can help with redress for human rights violations with a specific focus on the role of the SAHRC in promoting, monitoring and protecting human rights.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) has noted from media reports the dangerous conditions learners face in attempting to access their right to basic education within areas of the province. In view thereof, as well as the urgent need to ensure that the safety and best interests of children are upheld, the SAHRC will be visiting the areas affected to inspect and assess the concerns herein.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s Gauteng Provincial Office will, this week, embark on an awareness and information sharing roadshow and human rights monitoring in various parts of the West Rand and Sedibeng districts in Gauteng. During the four-day roadshow, the Commission will share information on human rights and engage with municipalities on service delivery challenges and specific areas of potential collaboration.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) working in collaboration with the Langa Advice Office will host a community engagement to educate members of the public on the Equality legislation and the work of the Institutions Supporting Democracy in the Republic. This is meant to amplify basic human rights awareness with specific focus on the equality provision of the Bill of Rights as enshrined in Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic South Africa, 1996.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) has noted the decision by Cabinet on 31 January 2022 to review the resumption of schooling to full-time learning in all schools. In a statement, Dr Max Coleman’s family confirmed that he had passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, the 16th January 2022, aged 95.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) will host its final monthly media briefing for the year 2021, on Tuesday the 21st December 2021 at 10:00 AM.
The briefing will be led by the Deputy Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Fatima Chohan and Commissioner André Gaum.

The South African Human Rights (the Commission) appeals to the people of South Africa for calm.
It has noted the decision of the North Gauteng High Court nullifying and setting aside the decision of the head of the Department of Correctional Services to grant medical parole to former President Jacob Zuma and ordering the latter to return to Correctional Services to serve the remainder of the sentence that had been imposed on him by the Constitutional Court. The Commission also notes that the social media is already abuzz with statements that have the potential to inflame the situation in the country. Some statements have been made on public news media which can have the same effect. The Commission recalls that such media statements did in fact inflame the situation in June / July 2021 and led to the July unrest that took many innocent lives and resulted in large scale destruction of property in addition to violations of other human rights of many people in the country. The Commission is in the process of investigating that July unrest.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the University of Cape Town’s Online High School have partnered on an initiative that aims to accelerate access to Online Learning, particularly for girl children in rural areas. In its pilot phase, set for the 2022 school calendar, this important collaboration will focus on the communities of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, about 50 km northwest of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.
